Beth-El Synagogue Kolkata

This was the first Synagogue we visited during our photwalk and this was the first time in my life I entered in a Synagogue. Beth-El was set up in 1856, older than Magen David Synagogue ,Kolkata, India. From outside this is covered in off white sand-lime plaster and a big clock centrally placed. Beth-El is smaller in comparison to Magen David Synagogue but it has more oriental appearance, as neat and elegant inside.  At the left hand side of the entrance has a plaque, mentioned that Beth-El was set up to the memory of famous Jew from Jewish Community “David Joseph Ezra”. “Ezra street” in Kolkata (earlier Calcutta)  is named after him. In the year AM 5616, Ezekiel Judah who bought the land and donate Rs.50,000 to established the Synagogue. Elias Shalom Gubbay, another renowned Jew from Jewish Community, who improved the edifice (AM 5646) with new column and arched windows. Particularly striking ornamented cast iron column,it was set by Elias Shalom Gubbay. The Alter is so beautiful (beautifully Curved and finished) and artistic stained glass window give a different dimension overall.

It is a protected monument, taken over by  Archeological Survey of India and for entry, in any Synagogue in Kolkata (Calcutta), special permission is required. Similarly we took the permission for entry from Nahoum Cake Shop at the New Market but at present permission can be obtained from Jewish Girls School, Kolkata.
