Cathedral of The Most Holy Rosary – Portuguese Church Kolkata

Just cross the Brabourne Road, on Portuguese Street, commonly known as Murgihata crossing you are at the gate of Portuguese church and church is visible from far even from Indian exchange place and Brabourne Road crossing. So it’s not too tough to locate the church.
This church was founded in 1799. Cathedral of The Most Holy Rosary Commonly known as Portuguese church and first catholic place of worship in Kolkata (Earlier Calcutta) India. Compound of the church is small but there is few trees around. However said, in 1700 it was a chapel of priests of order of St.Augustine. There was a time when no services or worship was conducted here, the reason behind it was the animosity between Anglican British administrators and Catholics.
There are two tower in the church and Towers are beautifully designed, look like minarets with rounded beautifully shaped cupolas. It has few verandahs in front and church is presently coloured in blue and white. There is building on back side of church in the compound and present serving priest of the church stays in the building. On Sunday visitors are allowed inside the church.
