Where was Mahatma Gandhi on the day of Indian Independence, 15th August 1947 ? Yes “Father of Nation” was in Calcutta (Kolkata). He was in Kolkata from 12th August to till 6th September 1947 but which place did he stay during those days ? Yes the house is still there, intact and really very well maintained. The name of the house was Hyderi – Manzil but now it is named after Gandhi “Gandhi Bhawan” and it is in Dr.Suresh Chandra Banerjee Road Kolkata (earlier Calcutta), India.
The house was belongs to Hyder Ali. Before August 1947 Suhrawardy was Chief Minister of West Bengal. Just before our Independence, there was communal violence due to partition of India. Suhrawardy and Mahatma Gandhi wanted to restore peace here and for that Mahatma Gandhi came to Calcutta on 12th August 1947. On 15th August 1947 Mahatma fasted as country was cut into two pieces India and Pakistan.
Now the building is maintained by PWD and “Purba Kolkata Bapuji Smarak Seva Samity” jointly. Here I met Mr. Jatin Chandra Das, Vice-President of “Purba Kolkata Bapuji Smarak Seva Samity” and most importantly he saw Mahatma Gandhi during those days. He shared with us some of his experience with Bapuji (He was at his teen then) and recalled those days during Independence. He offered us tea and over cup of tea, he talked with us more than a hour. It was a really nice experience for me and I was really thrilled that day.
Address Of Hyderi Manzil:- 150B, Dr. Suresh Chandra Banerjee Road, Kolkata.
