Magen David Synagogue Kolkata

Magen David Synagogue was set up in 1884 in the Italian Renaissance style and from outside perception of people about it as a Christian church but actually, it is a synagogue, I had the same feeling before my visit. The steeple of the Synagogue, it made of red-brick  (in a hexagonal section) and rises approximately  three to  four stories. Interiors are just outstanding, Venetian style arched windows and inside the assembly hall has a high vaulted roof with beautifully designed with colored glass windows. When sunlight passes through those colored glass windows, add some extra bit of beauty to it. Elias David Joseph Ezra was the first from Jews community to be appointed as Sheriff of Calcutta (Kolkata) and during that time it was erected.

It is a protected monument, taken over by Archeological Survey of India and for entry, in any Synagogue in Kolkata (Calcutta), special permission is required. Similarly, we took the permission for entry from Nahoum Cake Shop at the New Market but at present permission can be obtained from Jewish Girls School, Kolkata. However, the saddest part of it, the surrounding pavement is completely occupied by the local hawkers. Hawkers used the outer wall, even the entrance of Synagogue they used as a showcase for their products. Sometime, it is difficult for someone to locate the entrance. When someone goes inside, feel the  changes in the entire scenario because it is well maintained.
